Life Skills

Pro-Pare recognised the need for young NRL hopefuls to have a ‘bank of assets’ themselves. Pro-Pare services include:

  • The provision of physical development programs, with a focus on achieving the size, strength, speed, and skill goals of our youth.
  • The provision of a venue where youth can relax and enjoy time with their friends, along the lines of the former Youthtown in Nelson St. We have a volleyball court, a basketball half-court, and a PlayStation.
  • We devote a lot of effort to pastoral care.
  • Swimming lessons. Our boys greatly overestimate their ability in the water.
  • Assistance with driver licensing
  • Preparation for employment. Pro-Pare is developing a social enterprise arm and is able to provide casual employment at various events. We are developing relationships with a range of employers.
  • Supervision of Te Aho o Te Kura correspondence school studies for a number of youth who attend during the day.
  • We encourage talavou/rangatahi to aim high academically and through the hosting of short NCEA credit-bearing courses during school holidays, and enrolment at the summer school operated by Te Aho o Te Kura, we have been able to increase the NCEA Level 3 pass rate and the UE award rate of our youth from 10% to 100% (NCEA Level 3) and from 10% to 60% (University Entrance).
  • Most of the out-of-school NCEA credit courses we host are to do with life skills - planning for the future, financial literacy, time management, contributing to a group, and communication.

We are very aware of the mental health challenges facing Pacific youth and have developed our own well-being assessment tool. Māori
